I am a Vietnamese. And I was living in a place that rice was not distantly seen growing from my front yard. But let me tell you this. Today I opened the rice bag bought from Houston; it turned out to be sticky rice… OMG!!! I was not closing my eyes to pick up the bag. I know English. And … I couldn’t have a word for myself.
But, thanks to it, I had a good super tonight. Actually sticky rice is not a good idea for super, so I kind of didn’t know what to fulfill my stomach. And it’s 7:00 pm and I am hungry. “Okay, no sticky rice. I don’t have to eat it. Let’s find something else.” And I looked up my “food section” to find things available and of course, comfort. “Ah ha, here it is, shrimp”, my all-time favorite seafood, chicken hearts (never eaten by Americans but delicious for Vietnamese), young bamboo shoot leftovers from lunch. So, I made vermicelli soup with bamboo shoot and shrimps and chicken hearts by, first of all, microwaving all shrimps and chicken heart. (Let me tell you, I boiled everything so “cook” is like a fancy word to describe my dishes last semester here in Edinburg). However, it’s excellent this way to unfrozen those food and save time meanwhile. The leftovers were the base, and the new ingredients from microwave were on, then spices were added into and mixed up all together. The heat was turned on. The mixture was poured into the pan and a bit more water, a little bit Maggi and 2 minutes later, it’s done.
Trust me, it’s so good. Bamboo shoot and vermicelli and shrimps just get along so well together. Please don’t give me any credit whatsoever. Just a piece of luck!!!
By the way, the soup can be named in a fancy way- “bun mang vit” (vermicelli soup with bamboo) even though there is no duck meat.
Ah, my roommate just came in to tell me that it smelt good and made her hungry. “Really? Are you serious? Wow… Thank you!”
